Voice over IP – or as it is more commonly known, VoIP – is a form of business telephony that allows your business to make and receive calls over an internet connection. VoIP calling has become a widely used technology for businesses of all sizes in recent years for a multitude of reasons. We have explored some of the key benefits of VoIP telephone systems in more detail here:
Setting up traditional phone lines in a company is very often an expensive process. However, as VoIP calling is done over an internet connection, it drastically reduces your business costs by removing the need for lots of individual phone lines.
Additionally, calls between two or more VoIP phones are generally free, meaning interdepartmental calls will no longer cost you money. Calls that are made from a VoIP phone to a traditional phone line will still have a cost attached to them, but the rates will be much lower compared to traditional landline phone costs.
It’s not always easy to determine how many phone lines you will need, especially when you are still growing as a company. As new departments are created and new personnel are starting, your communication system must grow with your business.
Fortunately, your VoIP system doesn’t require additional expenses, so adding new users is easy to do. If a user leaves your company, you can then reassign the existing line or remove it completely, meaning as your business changes, so can your phone system.
VoIP allows users to integrate with a variety of software systems, such as email, file sharing and remote conference calling, which is perfect for those who work remotely or are frequently on the road. And you won’t need to worry about those long-distance calls racking up a large bill, as, we have previously noted, VoIP calling is relatively cheap compared to traditional landline or mobile calls.
Old technologies are slowly being phased out, including ISDN, or the Integrated Services Digital Network. The ISDN network is the current infrastructure that the UK uses for voice and data communication and is on course to be turned off in the UK by 2025, meaning you could be left with a redundant phone system.
By switching to a VoIP system, you are future-proofing your business by using a modern telephony system, meaning your investment will be protected for the foreseeable future.
Traditional phone lines can be difficult to set up and maintain, and are notoriously expensive to install. However, VoIP systems are relatively easy to install and maintain, even to individuals who might not consider themselves as ‘tech heads’.
Because VoIP calling uses an internet connection, it offers a higher quality of phone calls compared to the alternatives. You will be able to hear whoever is on the other end of the call in HD, particularly if you are using our hardware. The calls can be so clear when using a VoIP system, it’s almost like the person on the call is in the next room!
VoIP has an extensive list of positives, but how about negatives? The most obvious negative is that if your internet goes down, so will your phone calls, so a stable internet connection is a must if you are considering making the switch to a VoIP telephone system.
Some users may also experience a lag in their calls, due to latency issues. This is because packets of data need time to assemble and reassemble for a smooth and effective call to be made. However, thanks to constantly evolving data algorithms, these problems will slowly but surely become obsolete, so would only be a very short-term issue, if one at all.
